Modern society has divided the problems we face into different sectors and fields. Each field specializes in an issue. We have medical specialists to help us with individual parts of our body. We also have different types of engineers to look after our infrastructure. But who looks after our environment? Problems such as climate change and environmental pollution are not results of simple cause and effect. Human activities as well as socioeconomic problems intertwine with one another to create these problems. We cannot just deal with a single problem at a time as our interaction with the environment will send out a ripple effect across the whole system. A new type of thinking is required. We need someone who can understand the big picture and create innovative solutions that could work harmoniously with nature. I would like to be part of this cause. That is why I joined EVMT. We may seem unconventional. But changes in societies often come from unconventional people and dreamers. I believe EVMT students could help usher in a paradigm shift in thinking across the society. This thinking could hopefully end our obsession to conquer nature by destroying it. Instead, we will understand that humans are symbiotic with nature and develop a better relationship with it, leaving behind a better legacy on which our children can thrive.
EVMT is not just about the greater good for the society, it is also about developing the individual. When I was a freshman, I had never imagined that I could be the co-founder of a startup and have an internship experience in New York. In three years’ time, EVMT has equipped me with the knowledge, provided me with the opportunity and given me the courage to become who I am. With this experience, I could dream bigger and, hopefully, achieve higher in the future.
