Emily LAMJoining this competition was a wonderful experience because not only did I win the prize, but more importantly, I also learned a lot about how to build a low-carbon neighbourhood. Searching for relevant information was easy but the real challenge was to integrate the low-carbon elements into a single property development project. Fortunately, after numerous discussions with my teammates, we came up with an idea of creating a crossover between “unison” from the Chinese culture and the western concept “sustainability”. Out of my expectation, we got the Silver Award in the competition. Thanks to the fabulous experience, I will definitely take part in more case competitions in the future to discover more about the environmental field.
Jasmine LEEThis was my first time to participate in a competition related to environmental protection and building technology. Low-carbon home has been a broad topic in the recent years and at the beginning, finding where to start was one of the challenges. Besides, we also know little about the topic of green buildings and sustainable planning. Nevertheless, thanks to the practice we got from the environment courses offered by our EVMT program, we are used to handling broad topics like climate change and pollution. Skills, ranging from selecting the right piece of material from a sea of information to sorting out sub-topics, have been acquired, which have helped us a lot with coming up with our own proposal for the competition.
Gary LEEAfter participating in this competition, I have come to truly realize and appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of our EVMT program – it equips you with the necessary environmental knowledge and skills, and it is then up to you to apply them in whatever field you are interested in. I have also learnt a lot of professional knowledge in green building technology and residential design from this competition, which became very useful for my summer internship in a property management company. I feel grateful for the chance to study in EVMT; it is such a unique program that provides students with countless opportunities and possibilities, as long as we have the passion and the dream.
Zita LEUNGThe objective of the BEC Low-Carbon Home Program is for students to design a low-carbon residential area with their own ideas and knowledge. This competition has given us an opportunity to explore what kinds of green technology and architectural design would be feasible to achieve our purpose. I have also gained the experience to present on the stage in front of 8-9 professional judges. This has been a very fruitful and enriching experience.
